Plan 01
1 day in Gokarna
- 01
Day 1: Temple and beach
Start early morning at the Mahabaleshwar temple for a less crowded visit. Dress conservatively and remove shoes before entering the inner sanctum. Spend an hour or so inside, then walk along the main street, browsing local shops and stopping for chai or a light snack. In the late morning, walk down to Gokarna Beach (also called Main Beach) in front of the town, which is quieter than the more famous strands further south. Have lunch at one of the small restaurants, rest in the afternoon, and in the evening drive or walk to Om Beach to watch the sunset. If you are travelling with older relatives, choose a café with seating over beach walking; the sand can be hard underfoot.

Plan 02
2 days in Gokarna
- 01
Day 1: The temple and main beaches
Arrive early for the Mahabaleshwar temple before it gets crowded. Explore the small sanctum, then walk through the old town, stopping for chai and snacks. Visit Gokarna Beach in the late morning, rest in the afternoon, and in the evening drive south to Om Beach or Kudle Beach for sunset. These beaches are accessible by a short walk from a car park and offer a good view of the coastline.
- 02
Day 2: Beach exploration and coastal walks
After breakfast, take a local auto or hired car to explore more distant beaches. Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach are reachable by short walking paths from car parks. Alternatively, walk along the cliffs between the beaches if you are mobile; the paths are uneven but manageable for those comfortable with coastal terrain. Stop for lunch at a beach-side café or restaurant, then rest during the hottest hours. In the late afternoon, visit a local spice market or small shop for souvenirs, then have an early dinner before leaving or settling in for another night.

Day 1: Temple and coastal introduction
Arrive by morning and visit the Mahabaleshwar temple early, before large crowds form. Spend an unhurried hour inside, then walk the main street, browsing small temples, shops and tea stalls. Have lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, walk to Gokarna Beach or take an auto to Kudle Beach for a quiet evening.
- 02
Day 2: Beach circuit and coastal landscape
Visit Om Beach after breakfast, exploring the Om-shaped natural rock formation that gives the beach its name. Walk or drive to Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach, with stops at the small eating spots and shops along the way. Take your time; the beaches are unhurried and quiet. Return for lunch and an afternoon rest, then spend the evening at a different beach watching the light change or exploring the rocks and pools.
- 03
Day 3: Flexible beach day and excursion
Choose a beach to revisit, or take a day trip to nearby Mirjan Fort (about 20–30 kilometres away, roughly 1 hour by road) for its coastal location and historical interest, or to Yana, a scenic village with rock formations further inland. Alternatively, spend the morning at one beach and the afternoon visiting local craft shops or eating at a seafood restaurant. Depart in the evening or morning, depending on your onward journey.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- The Mahabaleshwar temple involves climbing stairs to the inner sanctum. Ask temple staff for assistance if needed; there are usually helpers available. Remove footwear and walk slowly inside.
- Beach walks can be uneven; wear good footwear with grip. Half Moon and Paradise beaches involve short walking paths with steps; evaluate your mobility before committing to a long walk.
- The town can be hot and humid. Carry a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Rest during midday (roughly 1–4 p.m.) and save active exploration for early morning and late afternoon.
- Gokarna has a few small pharmacies in the main bazaar. Check with your hotel for the location of the nearest clinic if you have health concerns. Medical facilities are basic; for serious issues, Mangalore is 150 kilometres away.
- Hire an auto or a private car for the day to avoid walking between distant beaches and the town. This gives you a cool place to rest and reduces sun exposure.
- Eat at established hotels and restaurants rather than street stalls if your stomach is sensitive. Avoid tap water; use bottled or hotel-filtered water.
