The short answer

Yana Rocks: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you enjoy a short jungle trek and offbeat shrines. It is about 30 minutes by road from Gokarna, then a 20-minute walk on a forest path. The rocks are dramatic, and the cave temple has character, but it is not a major site. Make it part of a day trip rather than the sole reason to leave town.

Why it matters

Why Yana Rocks is worth your time

Yana is an old pilgrimage spot, with the cave temple believed to be ancient. The two rocks are a geological curiosity in a region of laterite and jungle, standing up as columnar formations that draw geologists as well as travellers. Local Vaishnava and Shaivite traditions both claim the site, and the shrine here is part of the linked sacred spots along this coast.

For most visitors, Yana's appeal is that it is neither a famous monument nor a crowded beach—it is a genuine forest walk to something locally revered, unchanged by tourism infrastructure. It complements a Gokarna stay by showing the landscape and devotion beyond the temples on the shore.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive from Gokarna to Yana village, roughly 30 km inland towards the Western Ghats. Ask locally for the car park, where you leave the vehicle and start a 20–25 minute walk on a red-soil forest path lined with cashew plantations and wild vegetation. The path winds upward gently, then opens suddenly onto the two stone towers rising from a clearing.

The taller pillar is about 120 metres high and has a narrow cave at its base with a small Shiva temple inside, where a priest tends an oil lamp. The temple is cool and atmospheric, with worn stone walls and a low ceiling. Outside, you can walk around both rocks and look for climbers if conditions are right. Local adventurers sometimes lead climbs on the taller rock, but this is not a formal activity.

The whole walk is on shaded forest paths, so carry water and wear shoes that grip well. The best time to visit is morning, when the light through the trees is soft and the place is quieter.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes; the forest path has roots and loose stones
  • Carry water; there are no shops on the walk
  • Go in the morning for better light and fewer insects
  • The car park is signposted in Yana village; ask locals if you miss it
  • Mobile signal may be weak; download directions beforehand
  • Respect the shrine and keep voices low inside the cave temple
