Gopalpur-on-Sea is a small coastal town in Ganjam district, about 16 km from Berhampur, on the Bay of Bengal. It has a long, quiet beach backed by casuarina and coconut groves, a lighthouse that opens to visitors in the afternoon, and the remains of an old jetty. The 2011 census counted just over seven thousand residents, and the pace reflects that.
The town has an older story than its beach suggests. Gopalpur was a seaport in the Kalinga era, a departure point for voyages to Southeast Asia, and in the colonial period the port, lighthouse and trade with Rangoon were developed here. Storms have shaped it too: the 1999 super cyclone and Cyclone Phailin in 2013 both hit this coast.
Most visitors come for rest, sunrise walks and simple seafood, then add day trips. Tara Tarini, a hilltop Shakti shrine above the Rushikulya river, is the main pilgrimage stop. Berhampur is known for its handwoven Patta silk saris, Taptapani offers a forest hot spring in the Eastern Ghats, and in late winter the Rushikulya river mouth can host one of India's largest Olive Ridley turtle nestings.
Gopalpur suits slow trips. Distances are short, the beach is level, and winter weather is mild. Allow for limited choice in hotels, restaurants and public transport, and plan day trips with a hired car.
