History and context
The story behind Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary
Wikipedia records the sanctuary as established in 1980 and named after the nearby village of Bakhira, while the UP Eco-Tourism Board lists a 1990 notification. The lake is connected to the Bakhira canal and supports fishing, agriculture and fuelwood collection for nearby villages, with more than 30 fish species including rohu.
It was designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance, reference 2465, in 2021 or early 2022 depending on the source.

Why it matters
Why Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Gorakhpur's identity rests on the Gorakhnath Math, Gita Press and its position on the pilgrim road to Kushinagar and Lumbini. Bakhira shows the other side of eastern Uttar Pradesh: a wide floodplain wetland that supports migratory birds and the livelihoods of surrounding villages through fishing, farming and fuelwood.
It is described as one of the largest natural floodplain wetlands in India and is listed as Ramsar site number 2465. For a family that has seen the main temples and wants a calmer outing, it is the most substantial nature stop within a day's reach of the city. It is best treated as a birdwatching morning, not a sightseeing circuit.

How to experience it
Hire a car and driver for the day and leave Gorakhpur early. The usual road runs from Gorakhpur to Khalilabad on the national highway, about 35 km, and then roughly 17 km on the Khalilabad-Bansi road to the sanctuary. Khalilabad is the nearest railhead, about 20 km from the lake.
The sanctuary is a floodplain lake of roughly 29 sq km with wetland, village land and farmland around it. In winter, more than 40,000 waterfowl from over 23 species are reported to arrive, with migrants coming from as far as Tibet, China, Europe and Siberia. Resident birds include the grey-headed swamphen, known locally as kaima, and purple moorhen. Arrive early, scan the lake edges with binoculars and move slowly.
Because this is a working wetland where villagers fish and farm, expect rural conditions rather than a managed park. Take lunch and water with you, ask locally about boats and viewing points, and head back before dusk so you are not on the road after dark.
