The short answer

Kartarpur Corridor (Dera Baba Nanak side): what visitors should know first

Plan around its status. The corridor has been closed from the Indian side since May 2025, so do not travel for it without checking official notices. Dera Baba Nanak's gurdwaras are still worth visiting.

History and context

The story behind Kartarpur Corridor (Dera Baba Nanak side)

Wikipedia records that the corridor opened on 9 November 2019, with an Indian-side four-lane highway of about 3.5 km and a check post at Dera Baba Nanak. It closed during the pandemic and reopened in November 2021. India suspended corridor services indefinitely on 7 May 2025.

The agreement was renewed in October 2024 for five years, but this does not itself restore crossing.

Why it matters

Why Kartarpur Corridor (Dera Baba Nanak side) is worth your time

The corridor links the place where Guru Nanak spent his last years with Dera Baba Nanak, where his family settled. It opened on 9 November 2019, timed for the 550th anniversary of the Guru's birth, and the bilateral agreement was renewed in 2024 for five years.

Its closure shows how fragile such links are, so visitors should plan with flexibility. It matters to Sikh families who treat the crossing as a pilgrimage, and to anyone trying to understand why a small border town draws such attention. Checking its status before you travel is part of visiting responsibly.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

If the corridor is open, pilgrims register online beforehand, carry a passport and reach the integrated check post at Dera Baba Nanak, then cross on the dedicated road to the gurdwara in Kartarpur. Day visits only; there is no overnight stay.

If it is closed, the experience is limited to the gurdwaras in the town and the border district. Check Indian government announcements and local news close to your trip, because closures have been extended with little notice.

Plan any visit near the border with photo ID, and treat the surrounding area as a security zone. Follow staff instructions and avoid photographing installations.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check current status before travelling
  • Register only through official channels
  • Carry passport and photo ID
  • Do not photograph installations
  • Plan an alternative at the town gurdwaras
