How to reach Guruvayur by air

The nearest major airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), about 72-87 km away, roughly two hours by road depending on traffic. Calicut International Airport (CCJ) is about 85-100 km away. Prebooked taxis are the easiest option from either.

How to reach Guruvayur by train

Guruvayur railway station (GUV) is the terminus of the branch line from Thrissur, a short distance from the temple. Thrissur (TCR) is the main railhead, about 23-27 km away, with more trains. Check current services before booking.

How to reach Guruvayur by road

Guruvayur lies about 26 km north-west of Thrissur, about 86 km north of Kochi and about 95 km south of Kozhikode. State roads link it to Thrissur and the coast at Chavakkad; allow extra time on festival days.

Getting around Guruvayur

Autos and taxis handle short hops between the temple, Punnathur Kotta, Mammiyoor, Palayur and Chavakkad. The East Nada and the temple area are best explored on foot. Agree on fares before setting off.

Easy transfers to and in Guruvayur

  • Avoid Guruvayur Ekadasi, Vishu and Janmashtami unless you want the festival; crowds are heavy and rooms are scarce.
  • Carry water and a light towel; temple stone and sand can be hot underfoot, so wear socks where it is allowed.
  • Hire a taxi for Punnathur Kotta, Palayur and Chavakkad; they are short drives but not easy walks.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
