Yes for birdwatchers, between November and February, with binoculars and an early start. Go with a driver, keep to the main road and viewpoints, and do not expect formal facilities.

History and context

The story behind Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary

Deepor Beel lies in Kamrup Metropolitan district, around 13 km south-west of Guwahati. It occupies a former channel of the Brahmaputra and is a permanent freshwater lake of roughly 4,000 hectares, with a smaller protected sanctuary of about 414 hectares notified in 1989.

It was listed as a Ramsar site in 2002. Pressures include the railway line along its edge, the nearby Boragaon landfill, encroachment and siltation, and conservation work involves the Assam Forest Department, the state's Fisheries Department and organisations such as Aaranyak.

Why it matters

Why Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Deepor Beel is a permanent freshwater lake in an old channel of the Brahmaputra and was designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2002. Its sanctuary area was notified in 1989, and more than 200 bird species have been recorded, including many winter migrants.

It is also a working wetland for nearby villages, which fish and farm around it, and a reminder of how much natural water survives inside a growing city. A visit is a good half-day for anyone who wants wildlife without leaving town.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive out along NH 37 toward the airport and the Jalukbari side, and ask your driver for the beel viewpoints on the main road. A morning visit between November and February gives the best chance of large flocks, when the lake shrinks and birds concentrate.

Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens. Whistling ducks, waders and, in some years, the greater adjutant stork are among the sights reported here. A local birder can point out the spots that are productive and safe.

Be realistic about the surroundings. A broad-gauge railway line runs along the lake, and the Boragaon landfill adjoins it, so the view is not unspoilt. Keep a distance from the track, avoid walking into the wetland, and do not stay after dark.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early between November and February
  • Take binoculars, water and a hat
  • Keep away from the railway track
  • Confirm access and any boating with the forest department
  • Do not stay after dark
