The short answer

Best areas to stay in Guwahati

  1. 01

    Pan Bazaar

Best for: Travellers who want to be close to temples and bazaars

A central, bustling neighbourhood near Paltan Bazaar and the approach to Nilachal Hills. Hotels range from budget to mid-range. Traffic and noise are present, but you have easy access to sights and markets. Check that your hotel has air-conditioning, as the heat can be intense.

  2. 02

    GS Road (New Guwahati side)

Best for: Families and seniors who want a calm, modern base

A well-developed commercial road with good restaurants, cafés and hospitals nearby. Quieter than Pan Bazaar, and about 10–20 minutes by car to the city sights. A comfortable choice for longer stays.

  3. 03

    Zoo Road

Best for: Those seeking a quieter neighbourhood near the zoo and green spaces

Residential and quieter than the bazaar areas, with some heritage hotels and gardens nearby. About 15–25 minutes by auto to the Nilachal temples. Good for travellers who prefer a slower pace.

  4. 04

    Brahmaputra Riverbank

Best for: River views and evening walks

A few hotels and homestays offer river-facing rooms along the Brahmaputra Ghat. Cooler breezes in the evening, and easy access to boat rides and river walks. Fewer restaurants nearby, so plan meals at your hotel.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Guwahati

  • Visit Kamakhya Temple early in the morning before it becomes crowded and the heat builds. Wear loose, modest clothing and remove shoes at the temple entrance.
  • Plan one major outing in the morning and rest indoors during the hottest hours (12–4 pm). Guwahati's afternoons are tiring even in winter.
  • The Assam State Museum and Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra are mostly level and air-conditioned; good choices for afternoon rest.
  • Hire a car and driver for the day rather than taking autos between sights. It gives you a cool place to rest and avoids long walks.
