Why it matters

Why Bun Cha Huong Lien is worth your time

Bun cha is a Hanoi lunch dish, and this is among the names that travel and newspaper pages return to most. For a first-time visitor it is a quick way to eat something that locals also eat, rather than a tourist set menu.

It is also a useful reference point. Once you have eaten here you can compare the other bun cha places on this list, such as Bun Cha Dac Kim on Hang Manh, and decide which style of dipping broth and patty you prefer.

Be realistic about the fame: it is busy, it is not vegetarian, and the building is functional rather than quiet. For many families the value is the dish itself and the short, easy meal, not a long sit-down.

How to experience it

Bun cha is grilled pork served with rice noodles, herbs and a dipping broth. VietnamNet, HungryGoWhere and Vietnam Airlines all name Huong Lien, and the airline guide says the pork is charcoal-grilled and comes with nem ran, the fried spring rolls.

HungryGoWhere lists a set it calls the Obama combo (bun cha, a fried seafood roll and a beer) at a listed price of VND120,000, plus thit xien skewers. Prices change, so treat that as a rough signal and check the menu. A photo on Wikimedia Commons is titled as showing President Obama and Anthony Bourdain dining at this restaurant, which is why many visitors know the name.

Order one set per person to start, add a spring roll to share, and eat the noodles with the herbs on the table. It is a pork-based meal, so Jain and vegetarian travellers should not plan a meal here. Older diners who dislike crowds should come well before or after noon.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Go before or after the noon rush
  • Confirm opening hours on the day
  • Take a taxi to the door
  • Vegetarians should eat elsewhere or ask first
