Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, Hanoi: History, highlights and visitor guide

A well-designed museum on the country's 54 recognised ethnic groups, with an indoor gallery and an open-air garden of full-size houses. It is the best place in Hanoi to see Vietnam beyond the Kinh majority.

The short answer

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you have a half-day and want a calmer break from the city. It is out in Cau Giay District, so go by taxi or ride-hailing, allow 2 to 3 hours, and keep outdoor time for a cooler part of the day.

History and context

The story behind Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

The museum opened on 12 November 1997 after construction from 1987 to 1995. The main building was designed by Ha Duc Linh to resemble a Dong Son drum, with interiors by Veronique Dollfus. The collection is described as holding upward of 15,000 artefacts.

Why it matters

Why Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is worth your time

Most visitors only meet the lowland Kinh majority in Hanoi, but Vietnam has 54 recognised ethnic groups, many of whom live in the northern mountains close to Sapa and Ha Giang. This museum is the clearest introduction before such a trip, and it avoids crowds.

It also suits mixed-age groups. Children enjoy the outdoor houses, older travellers can stay in the air-conditioned galleries, and the design, the Dong Son drum building especially, is worth seeing in its own right.

Highlights

What not to miss

    Dong Son drum building

The main gallery is designed to resemble a bronze drum.

  2. 02

    Open-air houses

Full-size dwellings from different regions, including an Ede house.

  3. 03

    Southeast Asia wing

The kite-shaped 2013 building covers the wider region.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Begin in the main building, which is shaped like a Dong Son bronze drum, with exhibits on all 54 officially recognised ethnic groups. Textiles, tools, shrines, musical instruments and photographs are laid out thematically, and the labels are in English as well as Vietnamese.

Move outdoors to the 20,000-square-metre garden, where families can walk into full-size houses brought from different regions, such as an Ede house from the Central Highlands. Climb into the ones that interest you, and skip those with steep ladders.

A second building opened in 2013 in a kite shape and covers Southeast Asian cultures. It is smaller but gives useful context. Plan a lunch stop in a nearby cafe, since the museum is some distance from the Old Quarter.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Take a taxi both ways
  • Check opening days and ticket price
  • Wear sun protection for the outdoor area
  • Pick which houses to enter if stairs are hard
