The short answer
Bhatner Fort: what visitors should know first
Yes, it is the one monument in the town, and it explains why Hanumangarh has its name. Allow about an hour, go in the morning, and treat it as a walk around an old brick enclosure rather than a polished attraction. Confirm access and any fee locally.
History and context
The story behind Bhatner Fort
The fort is credited to Bhupat, a ruler of the Bhati dynasty, and is said to date from around the third century CE, though sources disagree on the exact date. Timur captured it in 1398 on his invasion of India. The Bhatis, Johiyas and Chayals held it until 1527, when Bikaner took it, and it passed back and forth with the Mughals. In 1805 Soorat Singh of Bikaner took it and renamed the town Hanumangarh.

Why it matters
Why Bhatner Fort is worth your time
Bhatner is one of the oldest forts in Rajasthan, and its brick construction is unusual in a state famous for stone. Timur called it one of the strongest forts in India after he took it in 1398, and its fall shows how the plains of the northwest were fought over for centuries.
The fort also explains the town's name. After Bikaner captured it in 1805, the victory fell on a Tuesday, the day linked with Hanuman, and the place became Hanumangarh. Seeing the mound is a way to read the town's layers, from early medieval rule to the nineteenth century.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Reach the fort from the town centre by auto or on foot; it is hard to miss because the mound rises above the surrounding streets. Walk around the outside first to see the scale: it is built entirely of brick, on a parallelogram plan with roughly a dozen bastions along each side, and covers about 52 bighas.
Climb to the top and look out over the town and the Ghaggar bank. Guides and travel accounts mention a Hanuman temple and a Shiva temple inside the enclosure, so ask which are open. The brickwork is worn and parts are patched, but it is easy to see how a mound this size could dominate the countryside in a flat land.
Plan about an hour, early in the morning when the brick is cooler and the light is soft. Pair the fort with a meal in town and, if you have a full day, a trip to Kalibangan to see the ancient settlement that lies in the same river valley.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
