The short answer
Jambudweep: what visitors should know first
A distinctive visit even if you are not Jain: it is a walk-through of Jain cosmology. Allow one to two hours, wear footwear that is easy to remove, and expect steps if you want to see the central model up close.
History and context
The story behind Jambudweep
The institution was founded under the inspiration of Gyanmati Mataji by the Digambar Jain Trilok Shodh Sansthan. Sources give 1972 or 1974 as the founding year, and the main model was completed in 1979. Later additions include the Chandraprabhu temple (1995), the Ashtapad temple (2000) and the Teen Lok Rachna (2010).

Why it matters
Why Jambudweep is worth your time
Jambudweep turns an abstract part of Jain doctrine, the structure of the universe, into something visitors can walk through. For Jains, cosmology is part of ethics and liturgy, so the model has devotional as well as educational value.
It is also a clear example of modern Jain institution-building, with a trust, publications and a continuous programme of events. Whether you come as a pilgrim or a curious traveller, it gives context for the older temples in town.

How to experience it
Jambudweep is built around a circular model of the continent of Jambudweep, with Mount Sumeru (Meru) at its centre. The model was completed in 1979 and has 137 inner stairs; a 1985 installation placed about 205 Jain images around the mountain.
Walk the grounds with a plan: start at the central model, then visit the Kamal Mandir (a lotus-shaped temple), the Ashtapad temple dedicated to Rishabhadev in 2000, the Terahdweep Jinalaya and the Teen Lok Rachna, a three-world structure inaugurated in 2010. There is also a temple to Chandraprabhu from 1995 and an eternal flame, the Akhand Gyan Jyoti, established in 1985.
The complex was founded by the Digambar Jain Trilok Shodh Sansthan, inspired by Ganini Pramukh Gyanmati Mataji. It is as much an educational site as a place of worship, so read the signs and ask the staff for explanations.
