Hatta is part of the emirate of Dubai but looks nothing like it. It sits in the Hajar Mountains, an exclave on the Oman border, roughly 115 to 135 km from Dubai city depending on the route and about a 90-minute drive. Wikipedia gives its elevation as 330 metres and records a population of about 13,000 in 2018, so this is a small town, not a resort strip.
The place has real age. It was once called Hajarain after the two mountains beside it, and the restored Heritage Village keeps an 1896 fort, watchtowers dated to 1888 and a working falaj water channel among the palms. Dubai families used it as a summer retreat long before the activity parks arrived.
Today Hatta has two faces. One is quiet: the heritage village, the dam lake and a honey farm that welcomes visitors. The other is active: the Hatta Wadi Hub, with ziplines, zorbing and water jumps, and kayaking on the dam. A good day mixes both.
For Indian families and senior travellers it works best as a single day or one overnight from Dubai, in the cooler months. Summer is very hot, vegetarian options are not well documented in the town, and the road trip is long, so plan food, water and medicines in advance.
