Why it matters
Why Water Sports and Sea Walking is worth your time
Sea walking is Havelock's most distinctive water activity because it gives a different perspective on the marine environment. You are not swimming, snorkelling or diving; you are walking the seabed like a terrestrial explorer, with air supplied from above. It is accessible to people who are not comfortable snorkelling or diving, making the underwater world available to a broader range of visitors.
The other activities are tourist entertainment, but sea walking is genuinely instructive. Walking on the seabed and observing fish in their habitat, without being a threat or a disturbance, is an experience that can deepen respect for marine ecosystems.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
For sea walking, you will be fitted with a weighted helmet at the water's edge near Radhanagar Beach. The operator explains the experience: you descend gradually on a ladder, your helmet stays dry, and you walk on the sandy seabed at 4–5 metres depth. Fish swim at eye level. The air comes through a tube from the boat above.
The sensation is strange at first—you are underwater but breathing—but most people relax within a minute and enjoy watching fish approach close, unafraid. The experience lasts 30–45 minutes and is surprisingly peaceful. Afterwards, you surface, remove the helmet and catch your breath.
Jet skiing, parasailing and banana boats are standard beach activities. Jet skiing is fast and thrilling but loud and brief. Parasailing offers views from height for a few minutes. Banana boats are social fun. None are unique to Havelock, but they work if you want quick, moderate-adrenaline activity.

Is sea walking safe?
Yes, when done with trained operators. You are tethered and supervised, walking upright on shallow seabed with air supplied from above. Emergency protocols are standard.
What if I get claustrophobic in the helmet?
Do not do it. Claustrophobia underwater is serious. Try snorkelling first to see if you are comfortable in water.
Will I see good marine life sea walking?
Yes, though from a different perspective than snorkelling. Fish are less fearful of the helmet, so they approach closer, allowing intimate observation.
How much does sea walking cost?
Typically 2500–4000 rupees for 30–45 minutes, including the boat ride and operator fee.
Is there a better activity for nervous swimmers?
Sea walking is ideal because you walk, not swim. Snorkelling with a guide is an alternative.
