Plan 01
1 day in Hazaribagh
- 01
Day 1: Sanctuary morning, lake evening
Leave early for Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary and spend the cool hours on forest tracks and at the lakes. Return to town for lunch and a rest. In the late afternoon drive up Canary Hill for the view, then finish with a stroll beside Hazaribagh Lake as the day cools.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary Half a day Moderate Cooler months, November to February, and early mornings Canary Hill 1-2 hours Moderate Morning or late afternoon, November to February Hazaribagh Lake About an hour Easy Late afternoon and evening, November to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary: Most of the visit is from a vehicle on forest tracks, which are bumpy. Watchtowers mean climbing stairs with few places to sit, so older travellers may prefer to stay at the lakeside and in the car. There is little shade or shelter away from the lakes.
With parents at Canary Hill: The summit is reached by road and a short walk, but the ground can be uneven and shade is limited. Take water, wear proper shoes and avoid the hot midday hours. Do not stay after dark, as the surrounding forest has wildlife.

Day 3: One longer day trip
Choose between Konar Dam for a scenic picnic, Rajrappa for the river-confluence temple, or Itkhori for the Buddhist relics and Bhadrakali temple. Each needs a car and an early start.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Konar Dam Half a day with travel Easy November to February Rajrappa (Chhinnamasta Temple) Half a day with travel Moderate Cooler months and weekday mornings; avoid festival days if you dislike crowds Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Rajrappa (Chhinnamasta Temple): Pilgrim crowds, steps down to the river and queues for darshan can tire older visitors. Avoid Tuesdays and Saturdays, when animal sacrifice and crowds are reported, if you prefer a calmer visit.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Hazaribagh trip for parents and children
- Keep forest and day trips to the cooler months and start early to avoid midday heat.
- Choose seated activities such as the vehicle-based sanctuary drive over climbs and watchtower stairs if mobility is limited.
- Carry water, snacks and any medicines for long drives, as roadside facilities can be sparse.
- The lakeside and Canary Hill are the easiest outings; Rajrappa and Itkhori can be crowded and tiring.
- Winter mornings can be cold, so bring a jacket and a shawl.
- Book a car with a driver familiar with forest roads, and tell them the pace you want.
