Plan 01

1 day in Hikkaduwa

  1. 01

Day 1: Reef, turtles and sunset

Start with a calm morning snorkel or glass-bottom boat at Hikkaduwa National Park, never touching the coral. Walk to Turtle Beach and see the hatchery with a hat and water. Have lunch at a beach cafe and rest through the heat. In the late afternoon, drive north to the Big Buddha and the Tsunami Photo Museum at Peraliya if you want context, then return for sunset on the beach.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Hikkaduwa trip for parents and children

  • Choose a guesthouse or hotel away from the nightlife strip. Music and traffic on Galle Road can carry until late.
  • Plan beach walks for early morning or after about 4 pm. The sun is strong and sand is hot underfoot at midday.
  • Swim only in calm, roped or lifeguarded sections, and avoid the sea in monsoon months.
  • Ask for a ground-floor room or a lift. Many small guesthouses have steep stairs.
  • Take travel insurance and carry regular medicines in labelled packs. The nearest large public hospital is in Galle, and private clinics exist in Hikkaduwa that mainly serve visitors; confirm prices before treatment.
  • The Peraliya memorial sites are short stops, but the photo museum has graphic images. Decide beforehand whether older or sensitive relatives want to go inside.
