Why it matters

Why Ba Xa Vegetarian, Nguyen Trai is worth your time

Buddhist-style vegetarian cooking, called chay, is the surest route to a meat-free meal in Ho Chi Minh City, where fish sauce and pork stock run through ordinary dishes. A vegetarian restaurant removes much of that guesswork, though we could not confirm the Nguyen Trai branch is entirely meat-, fish- or egg-free, so ask when ordering.

Ba Xa's large menu also helps mixed groups. One person can have soup, another fried noodles, a third a mock-meat plate, and older relatives can choose softer dishes without leaving the vegetarian table.

How to experience it

Expatolife describes Ba Xa as a vegetarian restaurant and lists noodle soups, stir-fried noodles, spring rolls and vegetarian versions of classic dishes, including a roasted vegetarian duck. Vietnam Découverte gives the opening hours as 8:00 to 22:00 and dishes from roughly 60,000 to 270,000 VND, and lists four branches; its Pasteur address is a different branch from the Nguyen Trai one here.

The Pasteur and Truong Dinh addresses are reported differently by the two pages, so this entry names only Nguyen Trai, which both agree on. Open the map link and check which branch is nearest your hotel.

A noodle soup or a plate of stir-fried noodles with spring rolls is an easy first order. The mock duck suits anyone who misses the shape of a non-vegetarian meal.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

A vegetarian menu should not, but say khong nuoc mam when ordering to be sure.
