Hoi An neighbourhoods compared
- 01
Old Town fringe (Cam Chau and Cam Pho)
Best for: First-time visitors, older parents and anyone who wants to walk to the sights
Good to know: The easiest base. Streets are flat, restaurants are close and you can return to rest at midday. Pick a hotel a few minutes from the pedestrian streets rather than on them, to avoid evening noise, and ask about flood preparedness if you visit between September and December.
- 02
An Bang beach area
Best for: Families who want sea and sand with an easy ride into town
Good to know: Beachfront homestays, small hotels and cafes a few kilometres from the Old Town. Quieter at night, but you will need a short taxi or bicycle ride for the heritage sights, and the beach is best in the dry season.
- 03
Cua Dai beach resorts
Best for: Resort stays with pools and longer lengths of beach
Good to know: Larger resorts line the coast between Hoi An and Da Nang. They suit older travellers who want lifts, pools and on-site dining, but you lose the evening walk through the Old Town unless the resort runs a shuttle.
- 04
Countryside homestays (Cam Thanh and the paddy fields)
Best for: Slow travellers who want rice fields, bicycles and quiet
Good to know: Pleasant if you are happy to be about 10 to 15 minutes from the centre. Roads are narrow and lighting at night is limited, so confirm transport and pick-up arrangements.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
