Why it matters

Why Chandramouleshwara Temple, Unkal is worth your time

This is one of the best surviving examples of Kalyana Chalukya architecture in the Hubballi region and part of the story of Unkal as an early Shaiva centre. It shows how temples of the period combined several faiths in their sculptural programme.

The temple is also a reminder that Hubballi's history stretches well before the railway workshop and the commercial city. For a traveller who sees only the modern streets, it adds depth, and the lakeside setting makes it an easy, attractive stop that does not demand much walking or planning from older family members.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start with the exterior walls, where niches hold figures such as Nataraja, Narasimha, dancing Ganesha, Sarasvati and Mahishasuramardini. The carving draws on Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shakta and Vedic traditions, which is unusual in one temple. Take your time over the eastern doorway, regarded as one of the finest of the 11th century, with five carved bands and a different pattern on each door.

The plan is a square cross with an entrance from each of the four directions. The temple once held a four-faced linga at the centre, now moved to the west side, and had more halls than survive. As a result the visit is about detail rather than scale.

Pair it with Unkal Lake in the same trip, since the temple stands just east of the water. Go in the morning when the carvings catch the light, and avoid midday heat.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Visit in the morning
  • Pair with Unkal Lake
  • Remove footwear when asked
  • Do not touch the carved surfaces
