The short answer

Igatpuri Railway Station: what visitors should know first

Not a sight in itself, but worth ten minutes if you arrive by train: the station's role as the engine-changing point on the ghat gives context for the town. Enjoy the snacks, mind the platform crowds, and use it as your gateway.

Why it matters

Why Igatpuri Railway Station is worth your time

The railway made Igatpuri. The line opened to the town in 1865 after the climb from Kasara, and the engine change at the top turned a hill village into a working railway stop with its own staff, sheds and traffic. That history still shapes the town centre.

For visitors, the station is also the easiest way in without a car, with Mumbai about 130 km away. Knowing what the platform activity means makes the later ghat journey more interesting, and the snack stalls give an authentic local bite. It is also a practical anchor for a car-free visit. With a train to Igatpuri and a pre-booked cab from the forecourt, a family can reach the fort, the valley viewpoints and the dam without driving the ghat road themselves, which many older travellers find a relief.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

If you arrive by train, give yourself a few minutes to look around. The station was opened in 1865 and sits at the head of the Thal Ghat, where locomotives are changed: trains from Mumbai switch to different electric locomotives, and banker engines that helped push uphill are detached. On a platform you may see this changeover happening.

The station is also known for its refreshments. Vendors sell vada pav, idli and coffee to passengers, so it is a natural place for a quick breakfast or tea stop while waiting for your onward vehicle. Eat from busy, freshly cooked counters and keep to bottled water.

Note that around 130 trains pass through, so platforms are lively. If you are with older relatives, plan your connection early, and avoid the stairs where you can. Outside the station, autos and taxis wait to take you to resorts and viewpoints around town.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check current train timings on Indian Railways before you travel
  • Ask staff about wheelchair or porter help if needed
  • Arrange your onward cab or auto in advance at busy hours
