Why it matters
Why Keibul Lamjao National Park is worth your time
The park protects the sangai, the endangered brow-antlered deer, which is Manipur's state animal. It is unusual because it sits on the largest floating mass of the lake, too deep to be marsh and too shallow to be open water.
The sangai's recovery is an important conservation story: from a small population in the 1970s to a few hundred in recent surveys. Visiting responsibly, with local guides, supports the conservation effort and offers a rare chance to see a species found nowhere else in the wild.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start early so you arrive when the deer feed. The park lies on the largest phumdi of Loktak Lake, so the ground is floating vegetation, and visits usually involve a boat or walkways. Ask a local guide or the park staff how to view the deer without disturbing them.
Bring binoculars, a long lens if you have one, and patience. The sangai moves in small herds, and sightings depend on light and season. Keep silent, follow instructions and stay on marked paths.
Combine the park with Loktak and Moirang on the same day, and confirm access, timings and boat arrangements in advance, since conditions on the lake affect what is possible.
