Why it matters

Why Gua Tempurung (Tempurung Cave) is worth your time

Gua Tempurung is a reminder that the limestone around Ipoh is more than a backdrop. Beneath it are large caves shaped by water, and this is among the most accessible. The domes and formations are a different experience from a temple cave.

Its later history adds another layer: it was a hideout during the Emergency period from 1950 to 1960 and has been used as a tin mine since 1970. For visitors it works best as a nature outing for confident walkers, which is why the walking level is rated demanding.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive to Gopeng, about a 24 km trip south of Ipoh, via the North-South Expressway or Federal Road. Wikipedia describes the cave as more than 3 to 4.5 km long depending on the source, with only part of it open to the public. The state has added lighting, stairs and bridges.

Inside there are five large dome-shaped chambers, each with different formations, temperatures and water levels. Take the standard walkway slowly and use the handrails, because floors are wet and slippery. Adventure-seekers can add a river section inside the cave, but that is not suitable for older travellers or small children.

Plan this as a half-day. Combine it with lunch back in Ipoh or with Kellie's Castle if you have a driver, and carry a change of clothes if you plan a river section. Check whether the weather affects water levels in the cave before you go.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Wear non-slip shoes
  • Check tour options and weather first
  • Carry water and a change of clothes
  • Avoid if you have trouble with stairs
