History and context

The story behind Itanagar Zoological Park

An official tourism site describes it as the first zoological park in north-east India. Area figures differ between sources, so none is quoted here.

Why it matters

Why Itanagar Zoological Park is worth your time

Zoos can be uncomfortable places, but this one has a purpose beyond display. It is a recognised zoological park, formerly the Biological Park, that focuses on the wildlife of the eastern Himalaya, species that most visitors to Arunachal will never meet in the wild.

For families, it is also the easiest wildlife stop in Itanagar. It shows creatures such as clouded leopards and hoolock gibbons that are rare, secretive and hard to see even with expert guides, and it gives context to the sanctuary and forests around the city.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Eastern Himalayan species

Clouded leopards and hoolock gibbons are species few travellers ever see elsewhere.

  2. 02

    The reptile house

A dedicated house for snakes, lizards and turtles gives children a closer look.

  3. 03

    The forest setting

Enclosures lie on forested hillsides, so the walk is part of the experience.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive soon after opening so that animals are active and the walking is comfortable. The park covers a large forested area, so decide in advance what you most want to see: the big cats, the gibbons or the reptile house. Walk in a loop and keep a rest stop in the middle.

Species mentioned by the official tourism site include clouded leopard, Royal Bengal tiger, gharial and hoolock gibbon, and there is also a reptile house. Migratory birds visit during the year. Enclosure layouts are on hillsides, so the walk between them is uphill in places.

Bring water and wear shoes with grip. Do not feed animals and keep noise low, particularly near primate enclosures. Combine with Ganga Lake and the sanctuary if you want a full nature day, but do not try to fit both zoo and lake into the afternoon alone.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the weekly closing day and hours before you go
  • Wear walking shoes; the site is hilly
  • Carry water and a hat
  • Do not feed animals
  • Start early for cooler weather and active animals
