The short answer
Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum: what visitors should know first
Go. It is the clearest way to understand who lives in Arunachal and how different the communities are. Allow about 90 minutes, check opening days first as it may close on certain days, and pair it with the Gompa uphill and Ita Fort finds.
History and context
The story behind Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum
The museum was established to commemorate the birth centenary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. A state committee chaired by the Governor, with the Chief Minister as vice-chairman, sponsored it, and the government's central museum was shifted from Shillong to Itanagar on 15 January 1990.
It holds ethnographic collections on the state's communities as well as finds from archaeological sites, including Ita Fort.

Why it matters
Why Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum is worth your time
Arunachal has dozens of distinct communities, each with its own language, dress and festivals, and a short visit to the capital can easily give the false impression of a single culture. The museum corrects that. It sets the Nyishi, Adi, Apatani, Galo, Monpa and others side by side, so that a later trip to Ziro or Tawang makes more sense.
The museum was created to commemorate the birth centenary of Jawaharlal Nehru, and the government's central museum was moved here from Shillong in January 1990. It remains the main public collection for the state's heritage, which is why it is worth an hour even if museums are not usually your thing.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Begin on the ground floor and move upward at an easy pace. The core of the museum is its display of the state's communities: costumes, jewellery, basketry, weapons and household objects, arranged so that you can see the differences between, say, the Nyishi, Adi and Apatani at a glance. Diorama-style displays with figures help bring the clothing and tools to life.
Take time over the textile and woodwork displays. Arunachal's weaving and carving traditions are among the best things to learn about before you shop, and the museum is an honest reference when you later look at pieces in the Craft Centre. Also look for the labels connected to archaeology; objects excavated at Ita Fort are held here, which links the capital's name to its deeper past.
There is a gift shop selling tribal crafts, according to travel guides. Finish with a short climb to the Gompa, which sits just above the museum and gives you a calm, elevated end to the morning.

- Confirm opening days before you travel
- Ask about lift or ramp access for older visitors
