The short answer

Chitrakote Falls: what visitors should know first

Yes, the best single outing from Jagdalpur. Go with a driver, ideally in the monsoon or just after for volume, or in winter for easier conditions, and keep behind the barriers. Allow half a day.

History and context

The story behind Chitrakote Falls

The falls lie on the Indravati river, which originates in Kalahandi district in Odisha. The site includes small shrines and Shiva lingas, and pilgrims bathe in the calmer sections. The drop is seasonal, with water diverted through the Jaura Nallah in the dry months.

Why it matters

Why Chitrakote Falls is worth your time

Chitrakote is the one sight in Bastar that most people have heard of. The falls are about 29 metres high and, in peak monsoon, nearly 300 metres wide, which is why they are often called the widest in India. They stand on the Indravati river, which rises in Odisha and flows on to the Godavari.

The site has also become a model for local tourism. The nearby village of Chitrakote was recognised in a national best tourism village competition in 2024, and a police help desk supports visitors. For a first-time visitor to Bastar, this is the sight that justifies the journey.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Chitrakote is a view, so the trip is about where you stand. Start from Jagdalpur early, as the road takes the better part of an hour. At the site, begin at the upper viewing deck for the wide horseshoe, then decide whether to go down the steps toward the base, where mist and spray gather.

In the monsoon the river is brown and the falls spread across nearly 300 metres, and spray can wet the lower paths. In winter the flow is calmer and the pools clearer, and from about April the falls shrink as water is diverted. Boats operate below the falls at times, depending on water level, and pilgrims bathe in calmer sections. Stay behind the barriers and avoid wet rock.

There is a government-run hotel at the top and log huts for staying overnight, which is useful if you want dawn or dusk light. LED floodlights now illuminate the falls at night. Carry water and a rain layer, and plan lunch before or after, as options at the site are limited.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
