Guesthouses and small heritage hotels here put you in the middle of the old town, with bazaars and sights steps away. The trade-off is narrow lanes, limited vehicle access, and noise from the bazaars. Check lift access, water supply and parking before booking if travelling with elders.

Best for: Families wanting a balance of bazaar atmosphere and vehicle access
Hotels and guesthouses on the main street or just outside the fort offer easier car drop-off and access to restaurants and shops. Still close enough to the fort for morning visits, with fewer narrow-lane hassles. A practical middle ground.

Best for: Comfort-focused travellers and those with older relatives
Larger hotels and resorts are here, with lifts, parking, restaurants and sometimes gardens. You are further from the fort and bazaars—a 10–15 minute auto or car ride—but gain quietness and convenience. More suitable for those who want a comfortable base and will hire transport for sightseeing.

Best for: Nature lovers and those seeking desert solitude
A handful of heritage and eco-lodges near the dunes offer an immersive desert experience. Sunrise and sunset over sand from your room is memorable, but you lose easy access to the fort and city. Needs transport to explore Jaisalmer itself.

What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
For parents and senior travellers
Comfort notes for Jaisalmer
- Visit the fort early, before 8 a.m. The shade is limited, and the stone gets extremely hot by noon.
- Use autos or a hired jeep between main sights rather than walking long distances in open sun. Distances in the bazaars are deceptive.
- Choose a hotel with lifts and good water supply. The old town has many guesthouses without elevators in steep multi-storey buildings.
- The palace and Patwon Ki Haveli involve real climbing. If mobility is a concern, admire them from outside or rest between levels.
