History and context

The story behind Akhnoor Fort

Construction began in 1762 under Raja Tej Singh and was finished in 1802 under his successor, Raja Dhian Singh. On 17 June 1822, Maharaja Ranjit Singh crowned Gulab Singh at the fort's Jia Pota ghat on the riverbank.

The fort has been a protected national monument under the Archaeological Survey of India since 1982, and conservation work is ongoing.

Why it matters

Why Akhnoor Fort is worth your time

Akhnoor Fort is important for two reasons. It is a protected national monument under the Archaeological Survey of India, declared in 1982, and it is tied to the coronation of Gulab Singh, the founder of the Dogra state, in 1822. For anyone following the Dogra story from Raghunath Temple and Mubarak Mandi, it fills a gap on the river.

The wider area has also yielded archaeological material, and excavations at the site are reported to show remains from several periods. Seeing the fort gives a sense of how the Chenab shaped trade and defence in the region.

How to experience it

Akhnoor Fort stands above the Chenab, about 28 km from Jammu, and the pleasure of the visit is the river setting. The fort has fortified walls, bastions and watch-towers, and is divided into two parts by a wall with a gate leading to a two-storey palace. Some courtyard arches still carry mural paintings, so look up as you walk.

The fort has been under conservation, and parts may be closed or unfinished. Ask your driver or hotel about current access, and be prepared to see only what is open. The riverside Jia Pota ghat is where Maharaja Gulab Singh was crowned in 1822, so the site has a place in the Dogra story.

Allow about half a day with the drive, leave early and carry water. Because Akhnoor is near the border, ask local authorities about any restrictions on access or photography, and follow instructions. Combine it with a lunch stop in Jammu and keep the afternoon free for rest.
