History and context
The story behind Dogra Art Museum
The museum began as the Dogra Art Gallery, inaugurated by President Rajendra Prasad on 18 April 1954 at Gandhi Bhawan, and was later upgraded to a full museum in the Mubarak Mandi complex. Master Sansar Chand Baru was its first curator.
The Pink Hall was built to commemorate the 1875 visit of Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, and originally housed a public library as well as the museum. Today it holds more than 7,000 objects.

Why it matters
Why Dogra Art Museum is worth your time
The Dogra Art Museum matters because it keeps the Pahari painting tradition of the Himalayan foothills in one place. The Basohli, Jammu and Kangra schools produced some of the finest miniature painting in North India, and the Rasamanjari series is among the best known. Seeing the originals helps you read the images you will see reproduced everywhere in the region.
The museum also tells the Dogra story through objects, from costumes and weapons to coins and manuscripts. Its move from a small gallery in Gandhi Bhawan to a full museum in the Pink Hall reflects how the state has tried to preserve its heritage. For anyone with an interest in art or history, it is a quiet, rewarding stop.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start with the paintings, which are the main reason to come. The museum's best-known collection is the Basohli series of Pahari miniatures, including the Rasamanjari, which uses lovers and heroines to illustrate classical poetry in bright colour and fine line. Take your time over each folio and read the captions. There are also illustrated manuscripts of the Shahnama and Sikandarnama in Persian, and works from the Hill schools of Kangra, Jammu and Basohli.
The museum also holds sculptures, terracotta heads from Akhnoor, coins, jewellery, arms and armour, costumes and metalwork. A gold-plated bow said to have belonged to Shah Jahan is among the more unusual objects. Photography is reportedly restricted inside, so look rather than shoot.
The building itself is worth a glance. The Pink Hall was built to mark the 1875 visit of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, and has a marble hall with inlaid jharokhas. Allow about an hour, and use the visit as the indoor part of a day in the old city, before or after the temples.
