The short answer

Bhandara Festival (Somvati Amavasya): what visitors should know first

Go if you want the spectacle and accept the crowds. It is not a gentle day: the steps are slippery, space is tight and turmeric gets everywhere. If you want peace, choose a weekday outside festival dates instead.

Why it matters

Why Bhandara Festival (Somvati Amavasya) is worth your time

The festival shows Khandoba worship at its most vivid. Turmeric is auspicious, and offering it is an act of devotion that dyes the hill itself. It also shows how Jejuri hosts crowds of different communities who share the deity.

For visitors, it explains why Jejuri is called golden. For the cautious, it is also a reason to visit on another day, because the calm version of the temple is a different experience from the festival.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Bhandara means turmeric, and on festival days devotees throw it in the air as an offering to Khandoba. The hill, the steps and everyone's clothes turn yellow, which is why the town is nicknamed Sonyachi Jejuri, or golden Jejuri. Drums, songs and dancing add to the noise.

If you go, arrive very early, keep to the edges of the crowd and decide in advance where your group will meet. Wear clothes you can discard, tie back long hair and carry a cover for your phone. Footwear is easily lost in the crush, so leave it in the car if possible.

On Somvati Amavasya the palanquin of Khandoba is taken in a procession to the Karha river for a ritual bath. Seeing it from a safe spot is easier than joining the crush. Afterwards, rest and drink water before the drive home.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the festival dates locally
  • Wear old clothes and protect your camera
  • Fix a meeting point for your group
