The short answer
Purandar Fort: what visitors should know first
Only if you are fit and want a long day. Purandar is historically important, but it is a steep, exposed visit far from Jejuri. For most older travellers, Malhargad or Saswad is the more sensible choice.
History and context
The story behind Purandar Fort
Wikipedia gives the earliest reference as the Yadava period in the eleventh century, though that claim needs a citation. The fort passed through Bahmani and Ahmadnagar rule before Shivaji.

Why it matters
Why Purandar Fort is worth your time
Purandar Fort stands at 1,374 m in the Western Ghats. Shivaji took control in 1649. In 1665, Mughal forces under Jai Singh besieged it, and the killedar Murar Baji Deshpande died defending it. Shivaji then signed the Treaty of Purandar, handing over the fort, and recaptured it in 1670.
Under the Peshwas, it served as a stronghold when Pune was under threat. The British took it in 1818, and it later served as a prison, an internment camp and a sanatorium.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Purandar as the main event of a day, not an add-on. Start early from Pune or Saswad, with plenty of water. The base village is Narayanpur, where the Narayaneshwar temple stands.
On the climb, take your time and rest often. The fort has multiple levels and viewpoints, and on clear days the views are wide. Wear sturdy shoes and carry a hat.
Do not try to combine it with other major sights on the same day. Return to Pune or Saswad for a proper rest and meal. Check the weather before you leave, because mist and rain can make the paths slippery.
