Jhajha is a small city in Jamui district in southern Bihar, close to the Jharkhand border. It sits on the Howrah-Delhi main railway line, roughly midway between Madhupur Junction and Kiul Junction, and most visitors arrive by train rather than by road. The 2011 census counted about 40,600 people, so expect a market town and not a tourist centre.

The reason to come is wildlife. Nagi Dam and Nakti Dam, two reservoirs a short drive from town, are protected bird sanctuaries where migratory waterbirds gather in winter, including bar-headed geese. Nagi was declared a sanctuary in 1984 and Nakti in 1987, and both are treated together in bird-conservation listings. Granite outcrops beside the water give the landscape an unusual shape.

The rest of the area is gentle and local. Simultala, in the Jhajha block, is a small retreat town with old bungalows and low hills. The hills east of Jhajha draw winter walkers. Farther away in Jamui district, the Lachhuar Jain temple serves as the gateway to Kshatriyakund, the traditional birthplace of Mahavira.

Treat Jhajha as a one- or two-day stop, ideally between October and February. Facilities are basic, entry rules at the sanctuaries are not published, and a hired car with a driver makes the day far easier than relying on local transport.

What and where to eat in Jhajha.

Food to try in Jhajha

Food and restaurants

Jhajha eats in the plain Bihari manner: litti-chokha, dal-bhat-sabzi, sattu preparations and seasonal sweets at tea stalls and small sweet counters around the market and railway station. Named long-running restaurants are not documented here, so ask your hotel for current recommendations and eat where the turnover is high.

Carry water and snacks for sanctuary outings, since nothing is sold near the reservoirs.

Shopping in Jhajha

Shopping

Shopping in Jhajha is practical rather than souvenir-led. The town market and the two bus-stand areas sell everyday goods, textiles and sweets. There is no documented craft tradition to shop for, so treat the area as a place for experience rather than purchases.

Choose without overthinking

Which Jhajha experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Nagi Dam or Nakti Dam if you only have time for one?

Choose Nagi: it is closer, better documented and more often used for winter birdwatching. Add Nakti only if you have an extra hour and want a second reservoir.

Sanctuaries or Simultala for a first half-day?

Choose the sanctuaries in winter for birds and open water. Choose Simultala for a gentler walk among old houses, especially if mobility is limited.

Stay in Jhajha or base in Deoghar?

Stay in Jhajha for early morning access to the sanctuaries. Base in Deoghar if you want better hotels and plan the sanctuaries as a day trip.
