How to reach Jhansi by air

Jhansi's airstrip is military with no civil flights. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Gwalior (GWL), roughly 100 to 120 km away by road, with connections to cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. Delhi is a long drive but a common alternative for international arrivals.

How to reach Jhansi by train

Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi Junction (VGLJ, formerly JHS) is a major junction on the Delhi–Chennai and Delhi–Mumbai main lines, with services toward Bhopal, Kanpur and Manikpur, and is served by the Shatabdi Express. It is about 3 km from the fort. Orchha has its own small station, but Jhansi has far more trains.

How to reach Jhansi by road

Jhansi sits at a junction of several national highways, with roads to Agra, Gwalior, Kanpur, Lucknow and the road toward Khajuraho via Mauranipur. Orchha is about 18 km away and Barua Sagar about 22 km south-east.

Getting around Jhansi

Autos, e-rickshaws and app cabs cover the city. A hired car with a driver is best for Orchha and Barua Sagar. The fort, Rani Mahal and museum are close enough for one morning by auto, while Laxmi Tal is a short ride from the fort.

Easy transfers to and in Jhansi

  • Use a car for the fort and Orchha, and keep the museum, Rani Mahal and St Jude's Shrine for the hottest hours.
  • Carry water, a hat and closed shoes everywhere; shade is limited at the fort and the chhatri.
  • Choose established sweet shops over roadside stalls, and drink only bottled or filtered water.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
