The short answer

Best areas to stay in Jim Corbett

  1. 01

    Dhikala and inside-park lodges

Best for: Travellers who want to wake up inside the national park with direct safari access

A few premium lodges operate inside the park boundaries at Dhikala and Corbett Riverside. These offer the most immersive experience and earliest safari departures. Accommodation is limited, expensive and must be booked months ahead. Roads inside are rough and winding.

  2. 02

Ramnagar and nearby villages (Kunao, Phato)

Best for: Budget-conscious families and travellers seeking variety of lodges and restaurants

The gateway town of Ramnagar is 10–20 minutes from the park entrance. Many mid-range and budget lodges are here. The town has tea stalls, basic restaurants and shops. Ramnagar railway station makes it convenient for train arrivals. Noise from traffic and local commerce is higher than resort areas.

  3. 03

Riverside resorts between Ramnagar and park gates

Best for: Couples, families and seniors who want nature without roughness

Several resorts sit on the Kosi River between Ramnagar and the park, offering garden views, river activities and quieter mornings. Safari transport is arranged from your resort. These are 20–40 minutes from park gates. Peaceful for rest days and nature photography.

  4. 04

    Nainital (1.5 hours by road)

Best for: Travellers who want a proper hill station base with better shopping and dining

Nainital is a larger, busier town with lakes, shopping, restaurants and heritage hotels. It is a longer daily commute to Jim Corbett safaris (early mornings are harder), but offers better weather, fewer mosquitoes and an easier experience for seniors. Useful as a combined Nainital–Corbett trip.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Jim Corbett

  • Safaris require early 4–5 a.m. departures and bumpy jeep rides on unpaved roads for 4–5 hours. Check your fitness level and discuss with your doctor before booking. Consider a jeep with better suspension and padding.
  • Choose a lodge with a trained naturalist driver (many speak English), not just any jeep hire. A good guide makes the experience richer and the ride less tiring.
  • Book safaris in Bijrani or Jhirna if roads are less rough. Dhikala is famous but has the most challenging terrain. Ask your lodge which zone is best for comfort.
  • Schedule one rest day during a 3-day visit. Skip a safari, rest in the lodge garden, visit the museum, or take a gentle riverside walk instead.
