Why it matters
Why Linganamakki Dam is worth your time
The Linganamakki dam is the structure that explains Jog Falls. Built across the Sharavati River, it stores water for the Sharavati Valley hydroelectric project and sets how much flows to the falls. About 2.74 km long and 193 ft high, it impounds a reservoir that supports electricity generation for the state.
Seeing the dam and the falls together gives a clear picture of how a natural wonder is managed. The reservoir also created the backwaters that now define much of the landscape, from Honnemaradu to Sigandur, and cut off villages that now depend on ferries.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Linganamakki is a calm complement to the noise of Jog Falls. The dam spans the Sharavati River in Linganamakki village, about nine kilometres from the falls, and from the approach road you can see the long embankment and the broad reservoir behind it. In the post-monsoon months the water spreads over a huge area of forested hills.
Treat it as an hour or two of looking rather than a full attraction. Stop at open viewpoints along the road, take in the scale of the structure, and talk to local drivers about how the reservoir affects the falls downstream. Because power and water-supply infrastructure is sensitive, follow any signs about photography and restricted zones, and do not enter closed areas.
If you have time, continue to the backwaters at Honnemaradu or on towards Sigandur for the longer shoreline views. Carry water, as there is little to buy near the dam.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
