The short answer
Lachit Borphukan Maidam: what visitors should know first
Go if you care about Assamese history. It is a memorial site with grassy grounds, not a large monument, and it takes under an hour. Pair it with the gibbon sanctuary, and check current access and timings first.
History and context
The story behind Lachit Borphukan Maidam
Lachit Borphukan led the Ahoms to victory at Saraighat in 1671. The district site dates the battle to 1672 and says the Ahom king Udayaditya Singha later laid his remains under the maidam, but most sources give 1671 for the battle.
He died in 1672 near Kaliabor, according to Wikipedia. 24 November is both his birthday and the date of Lachit Divas.

Why it matters
Why Lachit Borphukan Maidam is worth your time
Lachit Borphukan is one of Assam's best-loved figures. As commander of the Ahom army, he led the 1671 naval victory at Saraighat against a Mughal force under Ram Singh, a battle remembered as a defining moment of Assamese resistance. He died in 1672 and is buried in the maidam.
Maidams are the Ahom burial mounds, an older tradition than the Hindu cremation practices later adopted by the kings. Seeing one gives a quiet sense of the Ahom state's own funerary world, which is also the subject of the Charaideo moidams, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat this as a short historical stop. Walk the grounds slowly to the maidam, the earthen mound where the general's remains were laid, and take time to read any displays at the entrance. Photographs show an entrance gate, a hall and a cannon on the grounds.
Before visiting, read a short account of the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, in which Lachit commanded Ahom forces against a larger Mughal fleet. It makes the site much more meaningful. Lachit Divas on 24 November is the day Assam honours him; expect crowds and formal events around then.
The maidam is about 8 km from the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, so the two fit into one half-day. Go to the sanctuary first, while it is cool, and visit the memorial before lunch.
