History and context

The story behind Damodar Kund and Damodar Temple

Tradition links the founding of the Damodar temple to Vajranabha, and Wikipedia says it was renovated in 462 CE under Skandagupta. The kund itself is an artificial lake, and a temporary check-dam is rebuilt regularly to keep water in it year-round.

A temple to Narsinh Mehta was built nearby in the 1890s under Diwan Haridas Viharidas Desai. Revati Kund and the Muchukunda cave are also visited by pilgrims.

Why it matters

Why Damodar Kund and Damodar Temple is worth your time

Damodar Kund is one of the places where Hindu devotion in Junagadh is most visible. Pilgrims bathe and immerse the remains of the dead here, believing it helps souls attain moksha. For the Vaishnava community, Damodar is regarded as the presiding lord of the Girnar sacred area.

The poet Narsinh Mehta, a central figure in Gujarati devotional literature, is said to have bathed here and composed morning prayers. Visiting at dawn gives you a calm look at living practice, which is a different experience from the museums and monuments of the city.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive in the early morning when pilgrims are bathing and the Girnar hills are lit from the east. The kund is a long, shallow, artificial lake with a built ghat around it, about 78 m long and 15 m wide. Many Hindus immerse ashes here, so keep your distance and do not photograph rites without permission.

The Damodar temple stands nearby, built of pink sandstone with a main shrine and outer hall, each topped by a shikhara. It houses black stone images of Damodarji (Krishna) and Radha, with shrines to Balarama, Revati and Ganesha. Stay quietly for the morning ritual if one is under way.

Nearby is a temple to the 15th-century Gujarati poet Narsinh Mehta, built in the 1890s. This is also where the Girnar steps begin, so you may see climbers setting out in the dark; give them room. Combine with the Ashokan rock edicts close by.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Go at dawn for a calm visit
  • Dress modestly and remove shoes
  • Ask before photographing rituals
  • Combine with the Ashokan edicts and Girnar
