The short answer

Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden: what visitors should know first

Go if you have children or a spare half-day, and it is a good warm-up for Gir. Do not expect a wildlife safari; this is a zoo and enclosure sizes have drawn criticism. Go early, as animals are more active before the heat.

History and context

The story behind Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden

The zoo was established in 1863 by Nawab Mohabat Khanji Babi II of Junagadh State. It covers about 84 hectares and had about 1,436 animals in 2018.

It supplies purebred Asiatic lions for captive breeding, and in 1998 the Central Zoo Authority extended the programme to ten other zoos. A natural history museum opened in 2003 in the veterinary hospital.

Why it matters

Why Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden is worth your time

Sakkarbaug was set up in 1863 by Nawab Mahabat Khanji Babi II and is described as the oldest zoo in India. Its importance today is conservation: it is the largest centre for breeding Asiatic lions in captivity, with nearly 150 lions bred by 2008, supporting the long-term survival of a species that lives wild only in the Gir region.

It also reflects the Junagadh nawabs' interest in wildlife. Visitors should know that Wikipedia notes criticism of the size of some enclosures and that the zoo has said it is upgrading them to Central Zoo Authority standards. Judge it on its conservation work and your own comfort.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Go first thing in the morning, when the animals are most active and the park is cooler. Start with the lion enclosures, since the zoo's role in keeping the Asiatic lion going is the main reason to visit, then work through the birds and other mammals. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and plan a break halfway.

The park is shaded and has old trees, and it can be a pleasant walk as much as an animal-viewing trip. Because it is a large site, decide in advance how much you want to cover; many visitors tire before they reach the far enclosures. If travelling with children, bring snacks, hats and sun protection.

Treat it as a complement to Gir rather than a substitute. Wild lions survive in the forest near Sasan Gir, a separate destination you can reach by road as a day trip. The zoo gives you a closer look at the animal, but it is still captive.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early for cooler weather and active animals
  • Wear comfortable shoes and carry water
  • Check ticket and closure days locally
  • Do not expect a safari experience
