Why it matters

Why Vigneshwar Temple, Ozar is worth your time

Ozar is one of the Ashtavinayak, the eight Ganesha shrines of Maharashtra that pilgrims traditionally visit in sequence. This one honours Ganesha as Vighnahar, the remover of obstacles, linked in legend to his defeat of the demon Vignasura. For many devotees the visit is a ritual obligation as much as a sightseeing stop.

The present temple also carries a layer of Maratha history. Chimaji Appa, the younger brother and military commander of Peshwa Baji Rao I, renovated it after taking Vasai Fort from the Portuguese, and covered the spire in gold. It was renovated again in 1967.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Come in the morning and expect to remove shoes at the gate. The temple sits in a walled compound with a large gateway, two stone gatekeeper figures and lamp towers called deepmalas. The east-facing shrine is topped by a gilded spire.

Queues move steadily on ordinary days. Inside, the central Ganesha image is regarded as self-manifested and is flanked by brass figures of his consorts Siddhi and Riddhi. Look up at the spire and the lamp towers before you leave, because they are what distinguishes the compound.

If you come in November, the five-day festival that begins on Kartik Poornima, when the lamp towers are lit, is the most atmospheric time, though also the most crowded. On other days the place is calm, and it combines easily with Lenyadri, nearby.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Go on a weekday morning
  • Remove shoes at the gate
  • Carry water on busy days
