Sannati and Kanaganahalli Buddhist site: what visitors should know first

History and context
The story behind Sannati and Kanaganahalli Buddhist site
Sannati was found to hold four Ashokan edicts after the 1986 collapse of the Kali temple roof. Excavations at Kanaganahalli in 1994–98 and 2000–02 uncovered a large stupa, brick structures and Satavahana-era coins. The Archaeological Survey of India manages the site, and conservation resumed in 2022 according to Wikipedia.
Many excavated sculptures were moved to the Government Museum in Kalaburagi.

Why it matters
Why Sannati and Kanaganahalli Buddhist site is worth your time
Sannati and Kanaganahalli changed what historians knew about Buddhism in the Deccan. The Ashokan edicts and the relief labelled with Ashoka's name are rare, and the stupa shows that a major Buddhist centre stood on the Bhima long before the Bahmanis.
Visiting gives you a deeper layer of Kalaburagi's history than the medieval monuments, and links the district to the Mauryan and Satavahana worlds. The scale of what survives is modest, and much has been moved to museums, but the setting beside the Bhima and the weight of the inscriptions make it memorable for those who value archaeology.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan this as a day trip with an early start. The village of Sannati lies on the Bhima River, with the Chandralamba temple complex at its centre. In 1986 the roof of the Kali shrine collapsed here and revealed Ashokan edicts, which led to excavation. The site is about 75 km from Kalaburagi according to Outlook Traveller.
About 3 km away is Kanaganahalli, where a large Mahastupa has been excavated. The remains date from roughly the 1st century BCE to the 3rd century CE. Reliefs recovered here include one bearing the Brahmi inscription Raya Asoko, which identifies Ashoka. Many finds have been moved to museums, so what you see on site is largely foundations and layout.
Bring water, a hat and snacks, and arrange for a driver who knows the route. Visit the Government Museum in Kalaburagi first for context. If you have no interest in archaeology, you may prefer to spend the day closer to town.
