Why it matters

Why Kampot Railway Station is worth your time

The station is a small piece of Cambodia's post-independence modernism. It opened in 1967 in the New Khmer style, associated with architects such as Vann Molyvann, who tried to adapt modern design to the tropical climate with open halls, deep roofs and natural ventilation.

It also records the country's difficult recent history. Train service declined during the civil war years, and the line was only rehabilitated in the 2000s and 2010s, with passenger services returning in 2016. A visit therefore shows both architecture and recovery.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Visit if you are interested in mid-century architecture. The station's open-air design and zig-zag roof are typical of the New Khmer style. Walk the platform and look at the structure.

If you intend to take the train, confirm days and times in advance, as services have changed over time. Arrive early and carry water.

The station is a short ride from the town centre. Combine it with the Durian Roundabout, which is not far away. If you like architecture, look closely at the roof line and the way the open-air hall lets breezes through, which was a sensible response to the climate. Photographs are best in the morning light. Ask a local driver for the station if you are not sure of the route, since it lies a little outside the centre.
