Area by area

Kampot neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Old Market and riverside quarter

Best for: Walkers who want cafes, restaurants and the river within a few minutes

Good to know: The most convenient area, with the Old Market, cafes and colonial buildings close at hand. Rooms facing the street can be noisy at night, so ask for a quiet room.

  2. 02

Durian Roundabout and the town centre

Best for: Travellers arriving by bus who want practical services

Good to know: Close to banks, shops and the bus stops. Less atmospheric than the riverside, but handy and usually cheaper.

  3. 03

    Riverside countryside north of town

Best for: Travellers wanting quiet, gardens and a rural setting

Good to know: A scattering of bungalow and garden stays lies along the river road. You will need transport for most meals and sights, which may not suit older travellers.

  4. 04

Resorts toward Kep and the coast

Best for: Families wanting a pool and a resort stay

Good to know: Several resorts sit outside town. They offer space and calm but make you dependent on car or tuk-tuk transfers.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
