Day 2: Gardens and tea

With parents at Ceylon Tea Museum: Four floors with stairs, so older visitors may prefer the ground floor machinery and the tea room if there is lift access (check). The road up is steep; use a taxi or tuk-tuk.
With parents at Udawattakele Forest Reserve: The main paths are shaded but uneven and can be slippery or steep, with few benches. Choose a short loop near the entrance, wear closed shoes, and expect leeches in the wet season. Not ideal for wheelchairs.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Kandy trip for parents and children
- Do the temple ritual at a quiet hour, such as a weekday dawn, and ask staff about the best route if stairs are difficult.
- Keep afternoons free; showers are common from April to December and the hills tire older walkers.
- The lake loop, the museum and the botanic gardens are the most level options; the forest reserve and hilltop Buddha involve slopes and steps.
- Carry a small bottle of water and any regular medicines, as the National Hospital is in the city but travel insurance is essential.
- Use a car with driver for the temples west of Kandy and the tea museum, since the roads are winding and steep.
- Eat early and keep to cooked food; ask vegetarian restaurants about spice level.
