Why it matters
Why Tribal Museum, Baherakhar is worth your time
Kanha's forests were home to the Baiga and Gond long before they became a protected area. The Baiga lived in villages inside the park until relocations in 1968, and the change from forest living to life outside has put old traditions under pressure.
The museum helps preserve those traditions and gives visitors a way to support the communities directly. It also shows that conservation and local livelihoods are closely linked: training and craft income reduce the conflicts that arise when people depend on the forest.

How to experience it
The museum is an initiative of The Corbett Foundation and sits in Baherakhar village, near the Mukki zone. At its entrance is a recreated Baiga hut with everyday items such as a grinding stone and farm tools, and the facade carries tribal artwork.
Inside, the displays focus on the culture and traditions of the Bhumia Baiga and Gond communities: bamboo baskets, fishing equipment, jewellery, tools, art and musical instruments. A small shop sells locally made souvenirs, and the campus includes a sewing training centre; the foundation runs vocational training for tribal youth.
Visit between safaris, and treat it as the human half of a Kanha trip. Buy something from the shop if you can, because the money supports local livelihoods, and ask your lodge whether a guide can explain the exhibits.
