- 01
Khatia side
Best for: First-time visitors who want a gate close to the Kanha and Kisli zones and the Kanha Museum
Good to know: Khatia is the main entry gate and the nearest to Jabalpur, about 160 km by road according to the reserve's own guide. Lodges here range from forest-department camps to private resorts. It is the most convenient base but can be busy in the peak winter weeks.
- 02
Mukki side
Best for: Travellers who want the Mukki zone and the Tribal Museum, and a quieter feel
Good to know: Mukki gate is further from Jabalpur (about 200 km) and nearer Raipur, so the transfer is longer. Several lodges sit in the villages and forest edge here. It suits a stay of at least two nights so that the journey is worth it.
- 03
Sarhi side
Best for: Visitors who want the Sarhi zone and a shorter drive from Jabalpur
Good to know: Sarhi is the closest gate to Jabalpur (about 150 km in the reserve's guide), with a small village at Bichiya a few kilometres away. Fewer big lodges than Khatia or Mukki, so check what is on offer and how far it is from the gate.
- 04
Banjar river buffer area
Best for: Travellers who want a lodge in a quiet river setting with the park on the doorstep
Good to know: A few well-known lodges, including Kipling Camp and Banjaar Tola, sit along the Banjar river on the edge of the park. They are expensive and remote, so confirm transfer times, season dates and what is included before you book.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
