Before you go
Kannad with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose Ellora and Patnadevi over Antur Fort if stamina or balance is a concern.
- Take a car with good ground clearance and a driver familiar with the Nagapur road.
- Fill the tank and carry water; fuel and shops are scarce in the hills.
- Visit in the cooler months, and start before 8 am.
- Pitalkhora has a steep stair down; pace yourself or view the upper caves only.
- Keep medicines and a basic first-aid kit; the nearest large hospital is likely in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Easiest first
Places in Kannad sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (1)
- Patnadevi Chandika Devi Temple (Places of worship · 1 hour) — The temple complex is reached by road and the walk is short, mostly level. Expect some steps and uneven stone, and limited seating and facilities. Weekends and festival days can be crowded.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Gautala Autramghat Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day to a full day, combined with Pitalkhora) — Driving is comfortable if the roads are dry, but forest roads are narrow, winding and uneven. There are few toilets or seats away from the main sites. Senior travellers do best with a short drive and one or two stops.
- Pitalkhora Caves (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — A steep flight of concrete stairs leads down to the caves and the climb back is tiring. There is a waterfall alongside the path, which can be slippery. Older travellers can pause on the way and may prefer to view only the upper caves.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Antur Fort (Places to visit · About 4 hours to see the fort properly, plus the drive) — Not recommended for travellers with knee or balance problems: paths are uneven, there is loose stone and several ramparts and trenches have steep drops. Forest-department shelters on site lack water and other facilities, so there is nowhere comfortable to rest.

Practical tips for Kannad
- Fuel and supplies. Fill the tank before entering the hills. Petrol pumps and shops are scarce near Gautala and Antur.
- Water and food. Carry drinking water and snacks; nothing is sold at Antur Fort, and only one of its cisterns holds potable water.
- Road conditions. The final stretch to Antur Fort is unpaved, and forest roads are narrow. Use a car with decent ground clearance.
- Mobile signal. Coverage is patchy in the forest. Download offline maps and tell someone your route.
- Heat. April and May are very hot. Start fort and cave visits right after sunrise.
- Monsoon. Waterfalls look best from July to October, but steps at Pitalkhora and the roads become slippery.
- Permits and fees. Fees and rules for Gautala are not widely published; confirm with the forest office before you go.
- Dress. Wear sturdy shoes for the fort and caves, and dress modestly for the Patnadevi temple.
