The short answer

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach: what visitors should know first

Worth a half-day if you have a car or hired driver. It is a landscape to enjoy at the water's edge, not a swimming beach. Go in the morning or late afternoon, check the tide and local vehicle rules, and combine it with Thalassery.

History and context

The story behind Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Muzhappilangad lies in the Thalassery area of Kannur district on the Malabar Coast, beside NH 66. The beach is about 3.8 km long, and local rules have allowed vehicles on a stretch of about 3.4 km. In 2016 BBC Autos named it one of the six best beaches for driving. Dharmadam Island, a private island about 100 to 200 metres offshore, lies to the south and can be reached on foot at low tide from Dharmadam beach.

Why it matters

Why Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach is worth your time

Most Indian beaches are for walking only. Muzhappilangad is unusual because the firm sand lets vehicles move along it, an experience that BBC Autos picked out in 2016 when it listed the beach among the six best for driving.

It also shows a different side of Kerala's coast: a long, open shoreline with fishermen, coconut palms and small villages close behind, away from resorts. The nearby island of Dharmadam adds a small sense of adventure, although it is private. For visitors based in Kannur with a car, it is the easiest way to see a quieter, wider stretch of sea than Payyambalam offers, and it fits between Kannur and Thalassery on a single day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat this as a beach to look along rather than into. The beach lies between Kannur and Thalassery next to the highway and runs for roughly 3.8 to 4 km, with a drivable stretch reported at about 3.4 km. Hard-packed sand makes driving possible, and it is the main reason travellers stop.

Check the tide and local conditions first. Park well above the waterline and stay close to your vehicle. Drive slowly if the local rules allow it, and watch for children and walkers. Lifeguards are reported to patrol the beach, but you should still treat the surf with respect, especially in the monsoon.

From the south end you can see Dharmadam Island, a private island a short way offshore. At low tide it can be reached on foot from Dharmadam beach, but entry requires permission. Bring water and a hat, as there is little shade, and plan to combine this with Thalassery for lunch and the fort.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check tide and local vehicle rules before driving on the sand
  • Do not swim unless a lifeguard confirms conditions are safe
  • Carry water, a hat and sun protection; shade is limited
  • Keep valuables locked in the car
  • Plan the visit as part of a Kannur-to-Thalassery day
