The short answer

Paithalmala Trek: what visitors should know first

A good half-day trek for reasonably fit walkers, best from January to March. The usual route from Pottenplave is about 5 km uphill through forest and grassland. Older parents can enjoy the drive into the hills and the cool air at the start; the climb itself is not for anyone unsteady on uneven ground.

Why it matters

Why Paithalmala Trek is worth your time

Paithalmala is the highest point in Kannur district, at about 4,500 ft (roughly 1,370 m). On a clear day the view takes in a large part of Kannur district on one side and the forested Kodagu hills on the other, which is unusual so close to the Malabar coast.

The forest here is still in good condition because access is limited, though litter around the tower has been a problem. Wild elephants occasionally pass through, and the tall grass is managed by forest staff each winter. Visiting quietly and taking all rubbish back down helps keep it that way.

Highlights

What not to miss

Above the trees the hill opens into wide grassland with long views.

  3. 03

    Viewing tower

A tower near the top looks across Kannur district towards the Kodagu forests.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Most visitors use the Pottenplave route, which starts near Kudianmala, about 40 km from Taliparamba and 65 km from Kannur town. Pay at the counter beside the guest house, then follow the trail of about 5 km uphill through semi-evergreen shola forest. Above the trees the path opens on to grassland, and a viewing tower stands near the top.

There is a second, harder approach from Kappimala near Alakode. It is much less used and is best left to experienced walkers with a local guide.

Allow three to five hours for the round trip with stops. Start soon after the counter opens so you are on the top before midday heat or afternoon cloud. Carry water and snacks, wear shoes with grip, and expect leeches if there has been rain. Mobile signal is patchy, with only BSNL usually available.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start from the Pottenplave counter, near the guest house
  • Go between January and March for the best conditions
  • Carry water; there are no shops on the trail
  • Expect leeches after rain
  • Only BSNL mobile signal is usually available
  • Take all litter back down

The walk climbs steadily on a forest path and then crosses open grass to the top, so it suits only older travellers who walk regularly and are steady on uneven ground. Others can ride up to Pottenplave, sit near the start in the cool air and let fitter family members go up; there is no gentle short loop to the summit.
Tickets and access
A small entry fee is collected at the counter near the guest house at the start. Kerala Tourism lists visiting hours as 9 am to 5.30 pm. Confirm current fees and whether the trail is open locally, as access depends on weather.
