How to experience it
The sanctuary covers hill forest in the Western Ghats of Kanyakumari district, with thorn, dry and moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forest and evergreen shola patches. Seven rivers rise here, including the Thamirabarani and Pahrali. Tribal communities live in the sanctuary and nearby reserve forests.
There is no standard tourist circuit. If you want to go, start by calling or visiting the forest office in Nagercoil and ask what is permitted, by which route, and with what escort. Do not enter the forest on your own or follow village tracks.
The approach roads through the foothills are scenic and can give a taste of the landscape even without entering the reserve. Go in daylight, drive slowly, carry water and snacks, and be careful of elephants and gaur near the road. Most visitors are better served by the coast and the palace circuit, with this as a considered extra.
