Plan 01

1 day in Karaikal

  1. 01

Day 1: Temples, Thirunallar and the beach

Start early with the three temples on Bharathiar Street around the Chandra Theertham tank: Karaikal Ammaiyar, Kailasanathar and Nithyakalyana Perumal. Drive west to Thirunallar before the day heats up, ideally on a weekday, and look in at the Yazhmurinathar Temple in Dharmapuram on the way. Rest at midday. In the late afternoon go to Our Lady of Angels Church and then to Karaikal Beach and the Arasalar estuary for the sunset.

Spend the morning on foot around the three temples and the Chandra Theertham. After a long midday break, visit Our Lady of Angels Church and the Mastan Syed Dawood Dargah, and finish at the beach.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Thirunallar and Tharangambadi

Visit Thirunallar early on a weekday, with Dharmapuram on the same road. In the afternoon drive about 13 km north to Tharangambadi for Fort Dansborg, if you have a car and the energy.

Plan 03

3 days in Karaikal

  1. 01

    Day 1: The three temples

Walk the tank and the three temples slowly, with rests, then spend the evening at the beach.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Thirunallar and Dharmapuram

Make Thirunallar the main event on a weekday morning, add Dharmapuram, and keep the afternoon free. In the late afternoon visit the church and dargah.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Coast day trip

Hire a car for Tharangambadi's Fort Dansborg, Nagore Dargah and, if you wish, Velankanni, which is a long pilgrim day. Start early and keep each stop short.

Pacing

Pacing a Karaikal trip for parents and children

  • Visit the temples early; stone floors heat up quickly and you will be barefoot.
  • Choose a weekday for Thirunallar. Saturdays and Saturn transit days bring very long queues.
  • The town centre is flat and compact, so autos work well for short hops. Hire a car for Thirunallar and any coastal day trips.
  • Avoid May to June for heat and October to December for heavy rain; January to March is the most comfortable.
  • Carry water, a hat and easy slip-on footwear; temples need shoes off and sand is soft at the beach.
  • Do not swim at the beach unless locals confirm it is safe; currents on an open coast are strong.
