The short answer

Bhanwar Vilas Palace: what visitors should know first

The obvious base in Karauli. It offers more comfort and character than any other stay in town, and works well for visitors who will use it as a base for the palace, Kaila Devi and Timangarh. Book ahead and confirm room type, step access and meal arrangements.

History and context

The story behind Bhanwar Vilas Palace

The palace was built in 1938 as the new residence of the Maharaja of Karauli, after the family left the older City Palace. It was converted into a hotel in the 1990s and the royal family still lives on the property.

Why it matters

Why Bhanwar Vilas Palace is worth your time

Karauli has few places to stay beyond simple lodges, and the Bhanwar Vilas is the one that gives context. It is named for Raja Bhanwar Pal, according to an Outlook account, and shows how the court moved out of the older palace in the 20th century.

Staying here also supports a heritage building that remains partly a family home. For many visitors it is the difference between a hurried day trip and an unhurried two days in the district.

How to experience it

The palace was built in 1938 as the new home of Karauli's rulers, replacing the old City Palace, and is now run as a hotel. Arrive through the grounds and expect an art deco facade rather than a fort-like exterior.

Public spaces include a restaurant serving Indian, Continental and Chinese dishes with outdoor seating, a swimming pool built in the style of a stepwell, and a small museum with an old Buick. Some sculptures in the courtyard were recovered from Timangarh. Activities such as folk dances and camel or horse rides can be arranged.

Use it as a base: palace and Madan Mohan are close, and Kaila Devi, the sanctuary and Timangarh are day outings by car. Evenings are best spent on the lawns, as options elsewhere in town are limited.

Plan with confidence

Before you book the room.

  • Reserve rooms well ahead in winter
  • Ask for a ground-floor room if stairs are a concern
  • Confirm meal and activity charges when booking
  • Arrange car hire for day trips
  • Ask about quiet rooms during wedding events
